Tour Plan
Upon your arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport, you’ll be transferred to your hotel in Negombo, a coastal town known for its beaches and historical sites. This day is for rest and relaxation, allowing you to prepare for the exciting archaeological exploration ahead.
Begin your journey by visiting Dambadeniya, the capital of Sri Lanka during the mid-13th century. Explore the Dambadeniya Stone Temple, a significant archaeological site showcasing intricate carvings and architectural designs.
Next, travel to Yapahuwa, an ancient fortress and one of Sri Lanka’s medieval capitals. Built in 1301 by King Bhuvanekabahu, Yapahuwa features a striking rock fortress that rises 90 meters above the plains. The ornamental stairway and fortifications are still intact, offering a glimpse into the past. Yapahuwa is also known for its defensive walls and moats, which are a testament to the architectural ingenuity of the time.
Today, you’ll explore Anuradhapura, one of the most important archaeological sites in Sri Lanka and the island’s first capital. Known for its ancient temples and stupas, Anuradhapura is considered sacred by Buddhists and is home to some of the oldest monuments in the world. Discover the Sri Maha Bodhi Tree, believed to be a sapling from the tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment, as well as the Ruwanwelisaya Stupa, one of the largest and most revered stupas in Sri Lanka.
On your second day in Anuradhapura, continue exploring its ancient ruins, including temples, sculptures, and palaces. The city’s historical irrigation systems, which include ancient reservoirs and canals, are a remarkable example of early engineering. Visit the Jetavanaramaya Stupa, once the tallest structure in the world, and marvel at the sheer scale of the ancient architecture. This day will offer an in-depth look at the grandeur and sophistication of the early Sri Lankan kingdoms.
After Anuradhapura, travel to Polonnaruwa, another ancient capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Polonnaruwa flourished between the 11th and 13th centuries and is home to some of Sri Lanka’s most well-preserved ruins. Visit the Royal Palace, Gal Viharaya (a group of Buddha statues carved into stone), and the Vatadage, a circular relic house with intricate carvings.
Continue your exploration of Polonnaruwa with visits to the Sea of Parakrama, an ancient man-made reservoir that reflects the advanced irrigation systems of the time. Explore the Rankoth Vehera Stupa, Lankathilaka Viharaya, and the Sacred Quadrangle, a collection of religious monuments that highlight the city’s religious and architectural significance during its reign as the capital.
After your archaeological deep dive, head to Passikudah, a tranquil beach destination on Sri Lanka’s eastern coast. Spend the day relaxing by the beach and enjoying the calm waters of Passikudah Bay, known for its shallow waters that extend far into the sea, making it perfect for a peaceful retreat after days of exploration.
Today, you’ll visit Mahaoya, a rural village where you can immerse yourself in traditional Sri Lankan village life. Engage with local farmers and experience their agricultural practices, or take a boat ride on nearby lakes. You’ll also witness the simple lifestyle of the villagers and learn about their customs and daily routines. This is a perfect opportunity to understand the modern connection to ancient traditions in rural Sri Lanka.
Travel to the picturesque hill station of Nuwara Eliya, often referred to as “Little England” due to its colonial architecture and cool climate. Nestled in Sri Lanka’s central highlands, Nuwara Eliya is surrounded by tea plantations, misty mountains, and scenic waterfalls. Spend the day exploring the town, visiting a local tea plantation, and enjoying the fresh mountain air.
Board the scenic train from Nuwara Eliya to Ella, one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world. As the train winds through misty hills, lush tea estates, and dramatic landscapes, you’ll experience the natural beauty of Sri Lanka’s hill country.
Upon arrival in Ella, transfer to Beruwala Beach, a pristine coastal destination known for its palm-fringed shores and tranquil waters. Spend the day relaxing by the beach or exploring the local area.
After your restful stay in Beruwala, travel to Colombo, Sri Lanka’s vibrant capital city.
